Content
Ideal environment for young learners and teenagers: multi-lingual groups (we aim to mix 4 or more nationalities per class) - small effective groups (maximum 15 per class).
Tailored content: culturally-based - interactive - communicative - challenging - fun – informative.
Suitable resources: Our teachers do not use coursebooks for all lessons - we provide a truly teacher-created yet student-centred course of learning.
Appropriate topics and themes: Classes are comprised of either 10-13 or 14-17 year olds.
Language Awareness: focuses on accuracy - developing grammar knowledge and usage - includes coursebooks English in Mind and Inspiration.
Communication Skills: focuses on fluency – improving communication techniques – about students' lives, contemporary topics, current issues, etc.
Discovery Projects: focuses on UK culture/cities/history – integrates the English Course with the Excursions & Activities Programme.
Levels
Appropriate levels for every child - 3 classes for each of 6 levels: beginners to advanced (or CEFR levels A1 to C1).
Accurate level placement test at the start -our testing and placement procedures: We use a 'Quick Placement Test' (it tests grammar, vocabulary and reading) + an interview to assess oral ability. Students are placed into classes according to their language ability, nationality and age.
Monitored learning - review test at the end + a Manor Courses certificate of attendance + progress report.
Teachers
Dedicated teachers – with relevant qualifications in education or in teaching English - some return to work for Manor Courses for many years.
Topics and materials appropriate to the levels and age-groups -interactive and communicative lessons designed to capture learners' imaginations, and keep them interested and motivated.
Each morning students have 2 teachers and 2 different kinds of lessons - this gives students a variety of teaching styles, accents, ages, nationality, gender etc.
Timetable
Lessons from 09:15am-10.45am and 11.15am-12:45pm (Students leave class for a 30min refreshment break, 10:45am to 11:15am).
Once a week 2 classes are combined for a joint lesson with one teacher.
Students may only receive a full complement of 18hrs per week tuition only if they depart after lesson 2 on the day of departure.
Extra English study
We provide classes for all levels but we assume students have already had some exposure to English (either formal education or informal experience).
We recommend some study of English before arriving. Our
links page gives a few recommended online activities for practising vocabulary, grammar etc. before and after the summer.
