Integration + High School Experience Syllabus

Course Context

Levels: A1 – C2
From September to June, we offer short courses (usually 1-2 weeks) for groups of students aged 13-17.

Also available is an integration programme where students study for 15 hours per week, 3 of these will be in classes with British students. The course is 3 hours a day for 5 days a week.

The ‘British High School Experience’, is the same hours, international students study alongside British students but do not join their classes.

Methodology

We use a communicative, multi-skills and task-based approach to develop the students’ abilities in an interesting and motivational way. Students are given insights into a number of cross-cultural and intercultural themes. Significant cultural features of Britain are presented, and students are involved in actively reflecting on the similarities and differences between our cultures. We can also offer a systematic vocabulary syllabus, including important lexical chunks for conversation. Pronunciation practise is included throughout the course, as well as intonation and stress.

During the integrated lessons, international students will have the opportunity to complete tasks with the Dorothy Stringer High School students. Learners are encouraged to find the language they need in order to express their own ideas and communicate naturally with each other.

Aims

• To provide a positive learning atmosphere
• Provide the students with the opportunity to develop confidence and skills to apply basic principles of learning
• Increase self-motivation and self awareness
• Learn to appreciate cultural diversity
• To enable effective study skills
• To develop some learner autonomy
• To improve pronunciation
• To increase students’ vocabulary
• To increase the students expertise in spoken communication
