To make our syllabus as clear as possible, Manor Courses have created the following description, which we have called a ‘clear’ syllabus, the anagram of CLEAR representing 5 components of the English course. The syllabus identifies not just the lesson types, but the main 5 goals and 5 outcomes of the overall course, and therefore what each learner should expect and receive of each lesson type.

Communication (C) Lessons

Communication is the component of our general English course with an emphasis on fluency, by improving learners’ communication techniques and their range of vocabulary and functional phrases within motivating topic contexts confidently. This topic-based course changes themes daily. The topics includes a variety of relevant and interesting topics that typically work with children.

Language (L) Lessons

Language is the component of our general English course with an emphasis on accuracy, providing essential instruction and practice with specific structures, to finally be used freely in practical situations. ‘Structures’ includes, among many things, grammar and lexical chunks and collocations and word transformations. All 4 skills are used as students complete a series of activities taken from one of these course books: ‘English in Mind’, ‘Your Space’ & ‘Interactive’ by Cambridge University Press.

Excursion (E) Lessons

Excursion lessons are the component of our general English course that integrates the English Course with the Excursions Programme, and focus not only on UK culture/cities/history, but also the learners’ experiences. Receptive skills, involved in researching the destinations, are complemented with productive skills, when learners have to exchange information that they have found out. Further productive skills are involved when learners report what they did to each other and to the class, and when they use functional language in preparation for their time off-campus.

Activity themed (A) Lessons

Activity lessons are the component of our general English course that integrate the English Course with the Activity Programme, and focus not only on the themes and activities offered, but also the learners’ experiences. Previous themes have included carnival, horror, superheroes, or the lessons are about the type of events we schedule in the afternoons/evenings (eg. stage shows, learners’ musical or other talents, international sporting events).

Review (R) Lessons

Review lessons are the component of our general English course that acts as evidence of students’ learning, and allow a final opportunity to recycle learnt language and therefore demonstrate to the learners the progress they have made.
